Allow me to share my prayer through 1 Peter 1: 13-25 (ESV), a passage I have been studying for the last few weeks.

Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded,

Lord God, enable me to think rightly and to be ready to live for you.

set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

Lord God, may I – by Your grace and the power of Your Holy Spirit – set my hope fully on the grace that will be brought to me at Your Son’s return. May I not set my hope on things of this life, on ambitions or comforts, or people that were not meant, nor are able, to bear the weight of hope; but may I fully and completely hope in You. Thank you that the grace that will be brought to me is certain. My Saviour is coming again.

As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance,

Father, I want to be an obedient child not conformed to the perishing world, so please help me to be like You who rescued me from this path.

but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”

Lord God, may I marvel at the wonder that You, Holy God in heaven, called me, a sinner. I want to be holy in all my ways, in every thought and word and deed, in every attitude and motive. My Your Spirit enable me to be holy even as You are holy.

And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s deeds,

I thank You that I can call You Father, even though You are the Holy Judge. I thank You that You judged Christ in my place and His righteousness is what You see when You look at me. May I not minimize the weight of my sin and the hell it deserves, but may I not minimize the depth and greatness of Your grace to me either.

conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile,

Lord God, may right fear of You – respect and awe and wonder at Your Person and work, at the impartial justice that Christ bore for me, at Your holiness – may right fear of You drive out fear of man, fear of suffering, and all other fears. May right fear of You characterize my time as a pilgrim on this earth. May right fear of You make me courageous in the face of suffering and confident in You.

knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.

Thank You for rescuing me from the empty ways of mankind. Thank You that my ransom is eternal because it was purchased with Your Son’s precious blood that has cleansed me from sin.

He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

Thank You that my rescue was planned before the word was made. Thank You that I have been born at a time and place where the Gospel was made available to me. Thank You that Jesus Christ was manifest so that I could know You. Thank You that because of all He has done and is doing, my faith and hope are in You, a God who raises the dead and gives glory to His children. Thank You that because of Christ, this will be true of me.

Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love,

Father God, I confess I do not fully understand this passage, but I ask that You help me to be obedient to the truth and to have true love for others. I thank You that Jesus Christ’s obedience has purified me and enables me to obey and love, even as He obeyed and loved.

love one another earnestly from a pure heart,

I confess it is hard sometimes for me to love others. Humble me to love others as I ought. Remind me of Your great love for me, most clearly demonstrated in Your Son’s life, death, and resurrection. Lord, create in me a clean heart that can love earnestly. Fill me with Your love and may it overflow to all around me. May Your Holy Spirit empower me to love as Jesus Christ loved.

since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God;

I praise You, God, that You have given me new life and that Your Word – Scripture and the Word made flesh, Your Son – are alive and active. Thank You that I have access to Your Word; may I not neglect so great a privilege.

for “All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord remains forever.”

Lord, knowing that all that is in this world does not last, may I turn to Your Word, meditate on Your Word, and be transformed by Your Word. May Your Word abide in me and may I daily abide in it. May I hide Your Word in my heart that I might not sin against You.

And this word is the good news that was preached to you.

Thank You that salvation was preached to me; may I lovingly share it with others. Thank You for Your Word. Amen.
